The Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket has been designed to encourage learning through play. Often toys that are designed to encourage learning end up falling short on entertainment value. However, this toy manages to cover both areas successfully.
The first thing you notice about this toy is its bright colors. This is great for young kids, especially those who it’s aimed at in the 6 to 36 month age range. At that age color is a major draw, and can hold attention for some time. You’ll also notice the way the pieces are designed. The basket has a very friendly and cute-looking face on it, and the pieces are bold and chunky. This is a great start.
The educational value of this toy set lies most of all in the talking basket. It has a variety of phrases and songs (all spoken / sung in a cute voice that doesn’t get annoying even when you have to listen to it over and over again!) that teach a number of things.
Firstly, it always says “please” and “thank you”, helping your child to learn manners. It also helps to teach your child about shapes and colors by singing the colors of the rainbow, and asking the child to find the “square” piece etc. (the food pieces are in three shapes: square, triangle and circle). In addition, it teaches your child about words like “in”, “on” and “with” by telling your child to place one cup “in” another.
The differently shaped pieces all fit into slots of the same shape on the plates. This reinforces understanding of shapes, and also provides your child with challenges that help develop its motor skills.
The Leap Frog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket pieces are made of hard plastic which makes them durable and safe to play with. They’re also a great size for little hands to hold, which makes them more fun to play with. A couple of customers have mentioned that some pieces can fit into their child’s mouth and may therefore present a choking hazard. However, although they may fit into the mouth, it’s unlikely that the child could try to swallow them given their size. As such, the best thing to do would be to keep an eye on your kids at play and decide for yourself if the pieces look potentially hazardous.
Another criticism, although only minor, is that the basket has no way of knowing whether your kids are successful at the challenges it gives (such as finding the “square” piece). This means that it cannot tell your child whether it was right or wrong, meaning that it’s better for an adult to join in with play and tell the child if it was right or wrong.
To finish on a positive note, the batteries in this toy last a long time, and the pieces all fit inside the basket which makes it great for storage and helps stop the pieces from getting lost. Overall then, this is a great product.
